Chris Van Hollen has the talent to run the House. If he ever gets his chance.

More statesman than politician, Congressman Van Hollen is one of the few people we have left in Congress who transcend above partisan bickering in order to serve not just the Democrats or liberals but every American. Since a simple ‘thank you’ can hardly suffice as an adequate expression of gratitude given the vast amount of work Congressman Van Hollen has done on behalf of the 8th district of Maryland, we not only thank Mr. Van Hollen but wish him the highest levels of success as a congressman and beyond.

Van Hollen, while equally committed to more liberal positions, has expressed a willingness to be part of bipartisan efforts toward compromise. As the ranking member of the House Budget Committee, he served on the "supercommittee" charged with crafting a deficit reduction plan. Although the effort failed, Van Hollen got good reviews for his efforts to reach a compromise.

While we don't necessarily agree with every policy position Van Hollen has taken or endorsed, he is a proven leader and friend, always willing to engage and perform for his district.

Van Hollen deserves another two years.

We support Mr. Van Hollen, an adept legislator who vaulted to the ranks of leadership in the House. He has been at the center of efforts to forge a compromise on long-term debt reduction, and if any such deal can be struck, Mr. Van Hollen is likely to be one of its authors.

Although many voters hunger for an alternative to the gridlock in Washington, Timmerman won’t provide it. Given the choices, Van Hollen should represent the district, bringing a willingness to work through myriad challenges and champion the many interests of a more diverse district.

These stops are part of Congressman Van Hollen's ongoing listening tour of the new areas added to the Eighth Congressional District after Maryland redistricting.
